Take Away Coffee

I AM AN ADDICT - Part 1

It’s not about removing all plastic from our lives. It’s about kicking our addiction to avoidable single-use plastic, and changing the system that produces it.

Going plastic-free is not easy but reducing your plastic use is. Concentrate on the big four:

1. coffee cups

Only 1% of the 2.5 billion coffee cups used in the UK each year are recycled

2. plastic bags

Plastic bags fragment in 100-300 years depending on thickness and size, but will remain at large in the environment indefinitely. Refuse a single-use plastic bag and take your own

3. straws

Used for just 20 minutes, once discarded a straw can last in the environment for 100s of years. Straws Suck!

4. plastic drinks bottles

The UK uses a staggering 38.5 million single-use plastic bottles every day, of which fewer than 60% are currently recycled! Remember your refillable water bottle.

That's a good start. Then build from there.

FIGHTING MAYOR

In June 2019, the new Mayor of Kenilworth launched an anti-plastics scheme – a five-point plan coordinated through the Surfers Against Sewage charity.

The mayor, Cllr Alison Firth, and Verity Thompson, who are community leaders for the scheme, presented the plan to the Kenilworth All Together Greener (KATG) group.

To support the journey to Plastic-Free Community they will

  1. work with businesses in the community to help them reduce single-use plastics,

  2. inspire the wider community to spread the plastic-free message,

  3. mobilise and hold community awareness events and

  4. set up a group of local stakeholders to meet twice a year to move the campaign forward.

I am here to help Kenilworth! Further news on this will follow....

ETHICAL EATING & LIVING

Which supermarkets, which brands, which producers? Its a mindfield but the consumers are speaking, wallets are talking...

  1. Ocado's 'Green Van' delivery slot - book a slot when a van is in my neighbourhood.

  2. Morrisons the first supermarket to ban fruit plastic packaging.

  3. Bring your own containers supermarkets trials in Waitrose and Budgens.

  4. Washing acrylic / synthetic clothes less often and on a slower cycle.

  5. Buy plastic-free fruit and veg. If they are only available in pre-packed in plastic, leave the packaging at the checkout.  Supermarkets who need to dispose of it pay for their waste removal, and the more customers that complain to retailers about unnecessary plastic packaging the more pressure there will be on retailers to change their plastic-obsessed ways.

  6. Back to bars - of soap, shampoo. Lush are paving the way in the zero-plastic toiletries market, and now offering 40 per cent of its range plastic-free.

  7. Intercontinental hotels no miniature toiletries left in bathrooms for us to binge on.

SPARKLE YOUR LIFE!

We completely cut Sparkling Water bottles last year.

We bought a Carbonator that makes brilliant sparkling water without the plastic waste. Our plastic recycling quantities have dropped by over 70% since.

The water has a great taste and can be enjoyed without any guilt.

Why not push one step further - support restaurants and cafes who make their own carbonated water!

WHAT A LOT OF POO!

Did you know that every day 17 million poops are deposited by Great British dogs? That lots of poop and lots of plastic poop bags going to landfill and eventually ending up in our oceans.

Beco Bags are big, strong, compostable and made from natural plant fibres and are  naturally breaking down once disposed of.

Well done BecoPets. You have a new customer and you deserve it : your sustainable poo bags have stopped over 48 million plastic bags polluting our oceans for years to come.

I AM AN ADDICT - Part 2

Pledge against other offenders:

  • I will seek a non-plastic toothbrush to ensure they don’t pollute our environment after use.

  • I will seek plastic free toiletries as much as possible

  • I will source plastic free packaged foods as much as possible

  • I will support manufacturers and grocery stores who have a low plastic policy

  • I will purchase plastic free cotton bud sticks

Events

EVENTS

Sharing the message through events is key to the effectiveness of the eXXpedition organisation.

As one of 300 women who will be able to witness first hand the devastating effects of plastics in the oceans, it is important that my experiences do not simply stay with me.

Whilst this is a transformative experience, it will only be ultimately successful if I manage to create advocates upon my return.

I will keep developing ways to actively share my story as I reflect on my voyage and, as i do, will be adding events below.

MY NEXT EVENT:

Talking about my Plastics Awareness all-women sailing eXXpedition
